Because he seems harmonious, and I don't think it's harmonious down in sewers. But maybe we should ask him!

I mean if they tried to fly too high would the pressure kill them or the lack of oxygen?

Well altitude capability is given by their wngs, remember that early planes couldn't go that high at all. Basically the concept is that the longer and bigger the bird's wings are, the higher it goes - I don't have exact number, but I guarantee it's not more than 10K ft, and that's way pushing it. Think more like... 5... 8 tops.
Just making an educated guess here.

how can you be sooo sure?? are you saying that there are no chances of a bird with wings longer than that to allow it to fly to altitudes greater than 10k? even a teeny-tiny chance?

No, it's not about air density. Above 10k oxigen becomes too scarce to allow breathing.

now this whole 10 km thing.. is that a african or a european swallow? cause if it gripped it by the husk and carried it on a line then....

a bird could have developed lungs (or whatever they have) such that it allows them to breath in thiner air.... afterall fishes got it to breath inside water..
